Analogue gravity from Bose–Einstein condensates

چکیده
We analyse prospects for the use of Bose–Einstein condensates as condensedmatter systems suitable for generating a generic ‘effective metric’, and for mimicking kinematic aspects of general relativity. We extend the analysis due to Garay et al (2000 Phys. Rev. Lett. 85 4643, 2001 Phys. Rev. A 63 023611). Taking a long-term view, we ask what the ultimate limits of such a system might be. To this end, we consider a very general version of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (with a 3-tensor position-dependent mass and arbitrary nonlinearity). Such equations can be used, for example, in discussing Bose–Einstein condensates in heterogeneous and highly nonlinear systems. We demonstrate that at low momenta linearized excitations of the phase of the condensate wavefunction obey a (3 + 1)-dimensional d’Alembertian equation coupling to a (3 + 1)-dimensional Lorentzian-signature ‘effective metric’ that is generic, and depends algebraically on the background field. Thus at low momenta this system serves as an analogue for the curved spacetime of general relativity. In contrast, at high momenta we demonstrate how one can use the eikonal approximation to extract a well controlled Bogoliubovlike dispersion relation, and (perhaps unexpectedly) recover non-relativistic Newtonian physics at high momenta. Bose–Einstein condensates appear to be an extremely promising analogue system for probing kinematic aspects of general relativity. PACS numbers: 0470D, 0375F, 0480

The cosmological constant: a lesson from Bose–Einstein condensates
The cosmological constant is one of the most pressing problems in modern physics. In this Letter, we address the issue of its nature and computation using an analogue gravity standpoint as a toy model for an emergent gravity scenario. Even if it is well known that phonons in some condense matter systems propagate like a quantum field on a curved spacetime, only recently it has been shown that t...

The cosmological constant is one of the most pressing problems in modern physics. We address this issue from an emergent gravity standpoint, by using an analogue gravity model. Indeed, the dynamics of the emergent metric in a Bose-Einstein condensate can be described by a Poisson-like equation with a vacuum source term reminiscent of a cosmological constant. The direct computation of this term ...
متن کاملAnalogue quantum gravity phenomenology from a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate
We present an analogue spacetime model that reproduces the salient features of the most common ansatz for quantum gravity phenomenology. We do this by investigating a system of two coupled Bose–Einstein condensates. This system can be tuned to have two “phonon” modes (one massive, one massless) which share the same limiting speed in the hydrodynamic approximation [Phys. Rev. D72 (2005) 044020, ...

We discuss a toy model for an emergent non-relativistic gravitational theory. Within a certain class of Bose–Einstein condensates, it is possible to show that, in a suitable regime, a modified version of non-relativistic Newtonian gravity does effectively describes the low energy dynamics of the coupled system condensate/quasi-particles.
متن کاملQuantum tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices under gravity.
We investigate the quantum tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices under gravity in the "Wannier-Stark localization" regime and "Landau-Zener tunneling" regime. Our results agree with experimental data [B. P. Anderson et al., Science 282, 1686 (1998); F. S. Cataliotti et al., Science 293, 843 (2001)]. We obtain the total decay rate which is valid over the entire range of temp...
